From attendee to exhibitor: How exhibiting at World of Learning can transform your business
By Kim Ellis
Have you ever wondered if exhibiting at an expo is worth it?
I was blown away the first time I attended the World of Learning Conference and Exhibition. It was my first L&D expo, and I immersed myself in the free seminars, networking, and meeting exhibitors. At the time, I was employed, so my agenda was to bring back contacts and connections for the workplace. What could we implement? Who was doing what? And, yes, what merch could I snag for the team.
But attending as a freelancer? That was a whole different experience.
Suddenly, the drive to network increased, my conversations with exhibitors shifted, and I attended seminars with a new perspective. Even my approach to merch changed – from finding goodies for others to considering what I’d actually use myself.
Then my perspective shifted again: I wanted to exhibit.
I wanted to bring Go Ginger Learning Solutions to the world. I wanted meaningful conversations with potential clients, rather than hoping I’d get lucky with who I sat next to in a seminar or who became my tea buddy.
But let’s be honest, exhibiting is not cheap.
Exhibiting can feel out of reach
When you’re self-employed, the cost of exhibiting can feel daunting. Sure, there’s the cost of travel and hotels (which you might pay to attend anyway). And banners? Okay, roller banners are fairly affordable.
But the majority of the cost lies with paying the event organisers for your space. They work extremely hard to bring the event to life, from inspiring keynote speakers, curating an engaging agenda for the conference and seminars. And then there’s all the logistics like setting up the exhibition space to sorting out all the little details that no one notices until something goes wrong, they truly work their socks off.
For a small business, it’s a big chunk of money to justify. Yes, one client can pay it all back, but there’s no guarantee.
Yet, despite the cost, the benefits are undeniable. Exhibiting puts you in front of hundreds, if not thousands, of prospective clients.
Why exhibiting matters
When Free Spirits was founded, one thing was clear: we needed to exhibit at World of Learning.
We knew freelancers and self-employed professionals would attend – people like me, who attend with a different agenda. You’re not sourcing a new LMS (unless it’s for a client). Instead, you’re creating a mental rolodex of connections: If a client needs XXX, then I know someone.
More than that, attending is about networking, impromptu meetings, and collaborations over a brew while resting your feet. Exhibiting amplifies this, making your business visible in a way that online networking just can’t replicate.
Exhibiting at World of Learning: Opening the door for others
At the World of Learning Conference and Exhibition in October, I was exhibiting on The Learning Network stand as part of my role as a Board Director. While chatting with Tom McDowall, we mused: Wouldn’t it be amazing to exhibit at the World of Learning Summit, split the Free Spirits expo space and enable a member to exhibit as themselves – at no additional cost?
Could we do that? Would anybody want to share our space?
Excited by the idea, I shared it with Tracy Shah, the Joint Managing Director of Venture Marketing Group. To my delight, she agreed!
So that’s exactly what we’re doing.
We’re offering one member of Free Spirits the chance to share our expo space. They’ll be able to exhibit at this prestigious event – without the financial burden.
Why visibility matters
When you’re self-employed, being seen can make all the difference. Yes, you can build a successful business without exhibiting, but it’s harder. Harder to break into new industries. Harder to make connections beyond your normal sphere.
Exhibiting makes it easier. And let’s be honest, it’s also a heck of a lot of fun!
As an attendee, you walk around the expo, snagging merch, attending seminars, and making connections. But as an exhibitor, you’re on the frontlines. You get in early, chat with your expo neighbours, and build deeper connections with other exhibitors.
Most importantly, you’re seen.
As an attendee, you can blend into the sea of people. But as an exhibitor, your stand is front and centre. People see your offering, your smile, and might even stop to chat. And whether or not those conversations turn into leads, the visibility alone is invaluable.
