Should you ever work for free?

Date: 17/03/2026

It’s one of the most loaded questions in freelancing.

You’ll hear:
“Never work for free.”
“Exposure doesn’t pay the bills.”
“Know your worth.”

And yes… sometimes that’s absolutely true. But real freelance life is a little…shall we say…squiggly, because not all “free” work is actually free.

Sometimes you’re gaining:

  • experience
  • credibility
  • relationships
  • portfolio pieces
  • confidence
  • access
  • impact
  • or simply a foot in a door that was otherwise closed.

And sometimes… you’re just being taken for a ride. So how do you tell the difference?

When is non-paid work a smart strategic choice… and when is it under-valuing yourself?

That’s what we’re unpacking together in this open, honest Free Spirits discussion.

This isn’t a lecture.

It’s a space to think out loud, share experiences, and explore the grey areas of value, exchange and boundaries in self-employed life.

What we’ll explore together

We’ll look beyond money and talk about the many forms of “payment” freelancers actually receive, including:

  • Portfolio and proof-of-work opportunities
  • Visibility and credibility building
  • Strategic relationships and access
  • Skill development and stretch experience
  • Causes and projects aligned to your values
  • Community contribution and reciprocity

We’ll also discuss:

  • When free work becomes exploitation
  • Red flags vs green flags in unpaid opportunities
  • How to assess real value vs vague promises
  • Setting boundaries without burning bridges
  • How your career stage changes the equation

Expect discussion, reflection, and plenty of “it depends” honesty.

Who this is for

Freelancers, consultants and self-employed people who’ve ever wondered:

  • Should I do this unpaid opportunity?
  • Is this good exposure or a bad deal?
  • Am I being strategic… or taken advantage of?
  • How do others decide?

If you’ve navigated this already, bring your stories. If you’re facing it now, bring your questions.
