Using game design principles to create more compelling learning
Why do some learning experiences stay with us, while others are forgotten almost as soon as they’re finished?
Games have a way of keeping us engaged. We make decisions, weigh up our options, deal with the consequences and have another go when things don’t quite work out. But what is it about game design that makes these experiences so compelling, and how can we use those same principles in learning?
In this webinar, Chris Freebairn will explore what makes business simulations and game-based learning engaging and effective. He’ll share a couple of short examples before taking us behind the scenes to look at the design principles that make practice meaningful, challenging and worth repeating.
And you don’t need to be designing a full business simulation to make use of them. Many of these principles can be applied to smaller learning activities too.
What to expect
- How simulations differ from more familiar learning approaches
- The role of meaningful choices, trade-offs and feedback
- How progressive challenge keeps an experience engaging
- How consequences can compound across decisions and rounds
- How to balance strategic play with uncertainty and surprise
You’ll leave with a better understanding of the principles behind effective game-based learning and ideas you can use in your own work.
Who should attend this event
This session is for anyone working in learning consultancy, learning design or learning development who wants to explore how game design principles can make learning more engaging and effective.
You don’t need previous experience of designing games or simulations to attend.
