Find out how to use the steps from a Discovery Workshop to get a client brief you can trust and success measures you can prove.
Most projects start the same way. The client gives you a clear brief, the deadline is tight and everyone nods in agreement. Then the build begins, the gaps appear and you hear those words at the end: “That’s not what we wanted.”
The problem is rarely the quality of the work. It is usually something that was never properly agreed at the start, such as who holds the decision-making power, who the learners really are and what “done” looks like.
In this session, Andy Candler will share the key steps from his Discovery Workshop, drawing on nearly 40 years of delivering projects for some of the world’s biggest clients. Each step comes with a real-world example, something to watch out for and a practical takeaway you can use in your next client conversation.
This session is interactive, so bring your own project experiences and be ready to join in.
What to expect
We’ll work through five steps for getting to the truth of a brief:
- Who are you, really? Find out who holds the budget, who can change direction and who will be affected, including the people who never make it into the meeting.
- Let the client speak: Create the space for the real story to surface, and learn why silence is often your best question.
- Understanding the learners: Test the client’s view of their audience against what the learners actually do.
- The good and the bad: Treat what is already working as seriously as what is broken, because the right solution often sits close to existing strengths.
- Measuring success: Agree the evidence, the data and the timescales before kick-off, so you are never measuring against a moving target.
You’ll leave with a clear set of steps for opening a client project and practical questions you can use the next time you run a discovery conversation.
Who should attend this event
This session is for freelance L&D consultants, learning designers and content developers who take on client projects, particularly if you want fewer revisions, less scope creep and a stronger case that your work met the brief.
