The missing link between knowing and doing

Date: 28/07/2026
12pm (1 hour)

Great training isn’t enough on its own. And most of us already know that, if we’re honest.

People attend. They engage. They leave with good intentions. And then, a few weeks later, they’re pretty much back to where they started.

It’s one of the most frustrating things in L&D. You design something good, deliver it well, and the feedback is positive. But the behaviour change? Patchy at best. And when you try to work out why, it’s rarely the training itself that’s the problem.

The real issue is everything that happens (or doesn’t happen) afterwards. Managers who don’t reinforce it. Workplace cultures that quietly push people back to old habits. Systems that make the new way harder than the old way. The gap between knowing and doing is real, and it’s largely invisible in most organisations.

In this session, Natalie Herrett explores that gap: what causes it, what sustains it, and what you as an external contractor, can actually do about it.

What you’ll take away

You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of why training alone rarely creates lasting behaviour change, and what the research says about the barriers that get in the way.

You’ll explore the role that managers, culture, and workplace systems play in supporting (or quietly undermining) learning transfer, and pick up some practical questions to help your clients start thinking beyond the training event itself.

Who should attend this session?

This one is aimed at trainers, facilitators, HR professionals, and L&D practitioners who want to have more honest conversations about training effectiveness, and do something about it.

About the speaker

Natalie Herrett is the founder of Peak Elevation, specialising in helping organisations get better results from their learning and development. Drawing on experience across frontline services, she works with organisations to understand what actually helps learning translate into real-world practice.

Her focus is the gap between knowing and doing, and the role that managers, workplace culture, and organisational systems play in whether training leads to lasting change or quietly disappears into the ether.

This session is free for everyone to attend live. The recording will be available to Free Spirit members only.

Once you register for this webinar, you’ll be added to the L&D Free Spirits mailing list. We’ll send you our monthly newsletter, useful resources, event updates, and practical support. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any of our emails.
